We have been able to help the single moms and their families of Freedom Hall young men by mentoring their sons; sharing with them what is happening in Freedom Hall, and soliciting their input for changes or enhancements to our youth development program.
At regularly scheduled parent meetings we are able to share in more detail the actions and activities we’re involving their sons with. For example, when we review the academic performance and assist each young men to set semester GPA, improving attendance and reducing discipline level, we then review the finished product with their moms.
During these sessions, we are able to share ideas and actions that they can perform at home that will assist their son attaining his goal. In addition to organized parent meetings, we hold impromptu sessions with moms to understand what’s happening in our young men’s life away from MLK and Freedom Hall so we can address issues that come up from time to time.
Frequently we receive food, clothing, furniture, and other household items that we give to our families, as needed, in addition to connecting them to other resources. STS has developed synergistic relationships with The Salvation Army, Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services, area churches, and other organizations.
We also support our single moms through beautification projects, such as yard work and household repairs in their homes or apartments. On occasion, we provide transportation to parent meetings or other special events.
